Some excavations carried out at the end of the 19th century brought to light piles dating from the Bronze Age, thus confirming the thesis on occupation of the site since prehistoric times. Its foundation dates back to Roman times then controversy between Brescia and Verona in the Middle Ages, passing in the 400th century under the rule of Venice which made it a thriving commercial center thanks to its important urban location.
It was in ancient times an important exchange center due to its port and strategic position that facilitated its trade. Desenzano was a landmark not only for Italy, but throughout Europe from north to south, which over the centuries favored its commercial economic development.
The upper part of the city, called Cape Earth, is medieval, dominated by the magnificent castled castle castle that was rebuilt over the centuries to 1,400. The lower part, dating to 1,500, shows the lake with its beautiful and characteristic alleys, with an elegant center (Piazza Malvezzi) and Porto Vecchio.
Among the most important palaces is certainly Palazzo Todeschini which takes its name from the Brescia manufacturer Giulio Todeschini. It is a beautiful arcade building that still houses important temporary exhibitions.
The dome. Located in the square of the same name, it houses precious paintings by Andrea Celesti, Giambattista Tiepolo and Zenon Veronese.
The castle. Dating back to the Middle Ages and later restored, it welcomes concerts and theatrical performances during the summer season.
The archaeological museum. It houses mosaics and finds of ancient times (IV century BC).
The Roman villa. An important complex, mostly made up of ruins, dating back to the 4th century AD.
The Battle of Saint Martin of the Battle. Built in 1878 on the San Martino hill (10 km from the center of Desenzano in San Martino della Battaglia), it is 74 meters high and features paintings by Vittorio Bressanin devoted to the history of the Risorgimento, a macabre ossuary and numerous interesting historical testimonies to visit. In addition to the fact that this excursion allows us to visit the Gardesian hinterland, up and down between sweet hills of vineyards and farmland. Perfect for those who like jogging or biking for a picnic with the whole family.
