Excavations carried out towards the end of the 19th century brought to light pile dwellings dating back to the Bronze Age, thus confirming the theses on the occupation of the place since prehistoric times. Its foundation, however, dates back to Roman times and was then disputed between Brescia and Verona in the Middle Ages, passing in the 15th century under the rule of Venice, which made it a flourishing trade centre thanks to its important urban position.
In antiquity, it was an important trading centre thanks to its port and strategic position that facilitated trade. Desenzano was a point of reference not only for Italy but for the whole of Europe from north to south, which favoured its economic and commercial development over the centuries.
The upper part of the town, called Capo La Terra, dates back to the Middle Ages and is dominated by the splendid crenellated tower castle, which was rebuilt over the centuries until the 1400s. The lower part, dating back to the 1500s, shows the lake with its beautiful and characteristic alleys, with an elegant centre (Piazza Malvezzi) and the Porto Vecchio.
One of the most important palazzi is Palazzo Todeschini, named after the Brescian builder Giulio Todeschini. It is a splendid arched building that still houses important temporary exhibitions.
The Duomo. Located in the square of the same name, it conceals valuable paintings by Andrea Celesti, Giambattista Tiepolo and Zenon Veronese.
The Castle. Dating back to the Middle Ages and subsequently restored, it hosts concerts and theatre performances during the summer season.
The archaeological museum. It houses mosaics and artefacts from ancient times (4th century B.C.).
The Roman villa. An important complex, consisting mostly of ruins, dating back to the 4th century AD.
The tower of San Martino della Battaglia. Built in 1878 on the San Martino hill (10 km from the centre of Desenzano at San Martino della Battaglia), it is 74 metres high and its interior contains paintings by Vittorio Bressanin dedicated to the history of the Risorgimento, a macabre ossuary and numerous interesting historical testimonies to visit. In addition to the fact that this excursion allows us to visit the hinterland of Lake Garda, up and down gentle hills of vineyards and agricultural fields. Perfect for those who enjoy jogging or a bike ride for a picnic with the whole family.
